How to use interns within your company

   1. Tips for an effective internship policy
  • Make an inventory on which internship tasks are possible and where you can use an extra hand.
  • Stipulate which person will accompany the trainee and involve this person in the selection of the trainee.
  • Do you need a trainee throughout the whole year? Take two trainees on an annual basis and let the second trainee start in the last month of the first trainee. Then the trainees can instruct each other and this will cost you less time.
  • Inform your colleagues about the start date and the content of the assignment of the trainee.
  • Make (monthly) appointments for coaching conversations with the trainee.
  • More than 20% of all trainees become employed at the internship company. Working with trainees offers you an ideal possibility of getting to know the person during the internship period, so you are able to employ the best trainee after that period.
  • Let the trainee present his or her findings/recommendations at the end of the internship period in your company.

 2. Placing an internship vacancy
  • Title of the internship
Make the title attractive for trainees, for example: ' instructive marketing internship'.
  • Internship info
Clearly describe what the internship activities will be, on which department the trainee will work, what can be a possible assignment and which type of trainee you are looking for.
  • Period of the internship
The average period for an internship lies between 3 and 6 months.
  • Type of training period
Work experience period (2nd and 3rd study year): the trainee helps within the department. Graduation assignment (last study year): the trainee works independently for an internship period. The student researches and makes analyses and gives recommendations on a report.
  • Internship compensation
It is up to you to decide the interns compensation amount.
  • Number of days
Most of the trainees are working 5 days per week during their internship period. At some educations, the trainee is obliged to attend one day a week of school. Most students receive tasks from school for the internship and internship training lessons will also be provided by the school.
  • Extra info
Here you can describe which qualities the trainee must have, if your company is well reachable by public transport and if students from different types of education are welcome to apply as well.

3. Selecting of Trainees
  • Your first selection of trainees can be on education, starting date of the internship period and the region where the trainee lives
  • The trainee receives an e-mail notifying about your interest on his or her profile and then you can get in contact with each other.
  • Do not wait too long with responding, trainees like to arrange their internship well in advance.
  • You can ask the trainees to send a motivation letter and a C.V.
  • You can approach the trainees by telephone. There is the possibility to have a telephone interview to make a first selection. After this selection you can invite the trainees for a personal interview.

4. Instructing a trainee
  • Make sure the trainee is guided by a permanent employee. Be sure that you instruct the trainee clearly on your company rules. Let the trainee establish a clear internship task schedule and a plan of action in the second week.
  • Help the trainee with making an internship period planning and establish deadlines for the period.
  • Is it the first time you are working with a trainee? Let the trainee document everything what is told to him/her in a internship instruction book. By reading and using this book, the next trainee can quickly and independently get started with the work.
