Core Volunteer Program:
In its primary programming, AVSAR attracts skilled students and young professionals as volunteers and puts them across key initiatives managed by AVSARs partner NGOs. The volunteers are placed in a project that matches with their skills, experiences and meets their expectations. As AVSAR volunteers, these short-term volunteers (1-6 months) are given an orientation covering the city, non-profit sector in India and other basics that equips them with the knowledge required to work with partner grass-root NGOs. AVSAR charges a small fee of about USD 500 from the volunteers and is used to provide furnished accommodation and other miscellaneous facilities to the volunteers as well as provide moderate remuneration to AVSAR staff. The performance of these volunteers is monitored through a set of well defined key performance metrics and AVSAR follows its ethical code of conduct very strictly. AVSAR uses its website and strong Alumni network in foreign countries to facilitate the volunteers to the partners NGOs. In addition to the above, AVSARs strong focus on knowledge management drives it to conduct knowledge sharing meetings with partner NGOs and facilitate weekly presentation. AVSAR volunteers are not only providing a wide array of services to NGOs (basic medical care, health education curriculum design and implementation, accounting, strategic planning, evaluation etc.), but they are working with NGOs in a sustainable capacity building model. Through this model, AVSAR ensures there are methods to continue the projects after the volunteers leave and there are structures in place that help the staff learn the skills the AVSAR volunteers share with them. This is called the AVSAR Best Practices Initiative. Through this innovative model, AVSAR connects our partner NGOs with each other for resource mobilization and the sharing of best practices. Through inter-NGO meetings, newsletters, and a continuous stream of volunteers, AVSAR helps organizations and volunteers work in a manner where replication of programming is minimal and there is an open forum for the sharing of ideas. Since the launch of the program in February 2004, AVSAR has recruited over 69 volunteers that have provided 94 months of free volunteer services for grassroots organizations based Mumbai alone. We have expanded our network of NGOs and thus been able to serve the health care needs of over 10,000 people. Their satisfaction has been demonstrated in alumni who have continued to stay in touch with their partner-NGOs and continue to volunteer for them via the web. Other alumni have decided to stay longer to work with their NGO or come back again for a longer time frame in the future
